Dear Friends,
I am thrilled to share with you what could possibly be our finest Concordia concert season ever. Since our launching in 1997 we have brought together world class musicians to present for you the masterpieces of the chamber music repertoire along with lesser known gems to be enjoyed in the intimacy and charm unique to our region. This season will be no different, only better. This fall we are introducing a new offering which we are calling our “Notable Encounter I”. In this new format we will explore one work, in this case The Duo for violin and cello by Zoltan Kodaly. Toby Appel will be lead us through a revealing exploration of this timeless work to be followed by a performance of the work in its entirety with Toby on violin and Michelle Djokic on cello. Your destination for this event on October 6, 2013 is the sublime Nakashima Woodworking Studio nestled in the woods of New Hope and will include a wine and cheese reception.
Our regular subscription series will once again offer 3 concerts in the idyllic setting and wonderful acoustics of the Trinity Episcopal Church.
November 10, 2013: This program will introduce you to one of the brightest young talents of the clarinet, Jose-Franch Ballester in the performance of the Duo for clarinet and viola by Rebecca Clarke, The Kegelstatt Trio K. 498 in Eb major of Mozart and Dohnanyi’s Sextet in C major, Opus 37 for piano, strings and winds. Joining Mr. Ballester on this concert will be Orion Weiss – piano, Carmit Zori – violin, Toby Appel – viola, Michelle Djokic – cello, Julie Landsman – french horn.
February 23, 2014: The Suite for Piano left hand, 2 violins and cello by Erich Korngold Opus 23 and String Quartet #1 by Alexander Zemlinsky. Zemlinsky was one of Korngold’s most influential teachers and both of these men are wonderful examples of the wealth and depth of Viennese culture that existed in the early 1900’s. This breathtakingly beautiful work of Korngold’s, written for the one armed piano virtuoso, Paul Wittgenstein, will be performed by John Novacek – piano, Scott Yoo – violin, Kristin Lee – violin, Toby Appel – viola and Michelle Djokic – cello. Your heart will be warmed by experiencing the performance of these romantic gems of chamber music.
April 27, 2014: This program will explore the music of three Bohemian geniuses of composition: “Pohadka” Fairy Tale for cello and piano by Leos Janacek, String Trio #2 by Bohuslav Martinu and the Quartet in D major, No. 1, Opus 23 for piano and strings by Antonin Dvorak. These composers share in the fact that they are each remarkably unique in their style yet have at their core an element of Bohemian ethnicity evident in their music. Returning to New Hope on piano will be William Wolfram. The violinist will be the brilliant Arnaud Sussman making his first appearance with Concordia along with violist, Mark Holloway and cellist Michelle Djokic.
Our annual gala will take place once again in the sublime beauty of the Cradle Valley Farm by virtue of the generosity and grace of Candace Jones and Stephen Philips. Escape the doldrums of winter with us on the evening of January 10, 2014 as we explore the warmth of Tango inspired music of Argentina in our “From Buenos Aires With Love” program. The evening is complete with a sumptuous meal all in the wonderful company of the Concordia Family of supporters.
Please take the time to visit our newly designed web site www.concordiaplayers.org for more information on tickets, artist’s profiles and how to be involved.
