Our third and final subscription concert features three vastly differing and unique voices from composers whose cultural DNA is audibly imprinted in every phrase. In the Piano Quartet in A minor, Opus 67, written in 1931, composer Joaquín Turina infuses his music with the spirit of his homeland, Spain. William Grant Still, referred to as the dean of African-American composers, wrote his Suite for Violin and Piano in 1943. He found his inspiration from three sculptures: Richmond Barthé’s African Dancer, Sargent Johnson’s Mother and Child, and Augusta Savage’s Gamin. Each of these works was created in the 1930s, and each artist was associated with the Harlem Renaissance. We bring our season to a close with one of the first and still most beloved chamber compositions by Johannes Brahms, the Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Opus 25. This masterpiece possesses a distinctive style with roots in Hungary and “gypsy” music. One can easily imagine being in the streets of Vienna.

I was inspired to program this string trio by Missy Mazzoli upon hearing it and was intrigued by what Missy describes as “lies” in the title. She says, “…lies are not untruths, but instead refer to the old-fashioned word for an improvised and embellished story. This type of lie is not malicious; the process of invention and the telling of the tale are ultimately more important than the truth behind the account.” These words inspired me to program a collection of well-known works arranged for string sextet. These are truly believable and stunning arrangements! Lies You Can Believe In for string trio, written by critically acclaimed composer Missy Mazzoli, was commissioned by the Milwaukee-based ensemble, Present Music. Missy states: ”In this piece, I created my own ‘lie,’ an invented and embellished urban folk music. This piece is inspired as much by modern gypsy music, punk, and electronica as it is by traditional Bulgarian and Romanian folk music.” We also include the Prelude from Tristan and Isolde by Richard Wagner. This arrangement by Sebastian Gurtler allows us to delve into the sublime and wondrous prelude to one of the most revered operas of all time. The String Sextet from Capriccio, Opus 85 by Richard Strauss will add to the enchanting program. And finally, we are grateful that there exists this arrangement of one of the most profound works to spring from Mozart’s inspired pen, the Sinfonia Concertante, K 364. We close the concert with this Grande Sestetto by Wolfgang A. Mozart. (arr. anonymous)

This title suggests so many things to each of us. The lack of home or longing for one is tenderly portrayed in the beautiful string quartet bearing the title of our program Home by Pulitzer Prize and Grammy Award-winning composer, Kevin Puts. Then there’s the home of understanding one’s cultural and racial identity. Might Call You Art for soprano and string quartet is written by Emmy Award-winning composer Jasmine Arielle Barnes (born 1991). The title, “Might Call You Art,” comes from the last poem in this four-movement song cycle setting of the poetry of East Cleveland native King Weatherspoon. The words resonated with Barnes’s experience as a Black musician, and her nuanced treatment of poetic tone reflects her deep understanding of Weatherspoon’s lyrics. Her music has been described as “the best possible blend of Billie Holiday and Claude Debussy” by the Boston Globe. Jasmine sets the poems tunefully, like operatic art songs with stylistic references to R&B, gospel, and the marching band music of historically Black colleges and universities. Finally, we explore the return to one’s home or birthplace in the String Quartet in G Major #13, Opus 106 by Czech composer Antonin Dvořák. This is the first work to be written entirely in his native country once Dvořák had returned home from the United States.

For our main event, please join us in the glorious setting of the barn at Glen Oaks Farm for an immersive experience where our artists will take us on a musical journey starting from Haydn’s string quartet The Dream, stopping to enjoy Summer Tunes by Pēteris Vasks, and Vivaldi’s Summer, on to the heavens with Musica Celestis by Aaron Jay Kernis, and finally landing on Antonin Dvořák’s Nature Lies Peaceful. This homage to the profound relationship music has always shared with nature will be further amplified with projections, created by videographer Zak Winokur, reflective of the natural beauty that surrounds us in all the seasons. I can imagine no more beautiful way to launch the 2024-2025 season together. In the meantime, take advantage of the abundance of organic produce, farm-fresh eggs, and grass-fed beef that Spring Creek Farm makes available to the public.

“one-of-kind fusion of folk music”
“It’s a very special thing when two musical cultures come together to create something that didn’t exist before.” – NPR
Grammy-nominated, Venezuelan, cuatro virtuoso Jorge Glem teams up with American accordionist, pianist, and composer Sam Reider to create a one-of-a-kind fusion of folk music. With jaw dropping virtuosity and infectious chemistry, these musicians and friends are breaking down all the boundaries between their two continents, languages, and cultures.
Jorge and Sam blend Venezuela’s driving dance rhythms with American folk music and jazz. Their debut record, Brooklyn Cumaná, features a mix of Venezuelan and American traditional music, original compositions, and collaborations with special guests. Brooklyn Cumaná was released in November 2022 at a concert at Lincoln Center. In February 2023 Glem and Reider performed on NPR’s Tiny Desk.
The duo will be playing selections from Brooklyn Cumaná on June 9th at 7pm at SummerFest 2023 at Cradle Valley Farm in New Hope, PA.
Both friendly and approachable in person, you’ll also have a chance to meet them after the show! The evening includes delicious food, cocktails, and great fun with good friends in the beautiful, warm, June weather!
