It is a great honor to welcome the masterful tenor, Nicholas Phan to Concordia for a performance of Vaughan Williams “Merciless Beauty” as well as “On Wenlock Edge”. Sharing the first half of this program is Langsamer Satz for string quartet by Anton Webern a work needing no words to convey the tremendous beauty. To close this program we will hear Edward Elgar’s piano quintet to round out this largely English program.

This year’s Gala presents a program that will include Ombra mai fu of Handel, Adelaide by Franz Schubert as well as works by Ricky Ian Gordon based on the poetry of Langston Hughes. The versatility of Mr. Mitchell’s voice is sure to take your breath away. Join us as we take this occasion to honor the birth and inspiration of the great American leader, Martin Luther King. The evening includes cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and sumptuous dinner.

New & New Old

Join us for the second subscription concert of the season, “New u0026amp; New Old”, featuring the first appearance of extraordinary clarinetist Romie de Guise-Langlois. She will be joined by pianist John Novacek for the lovely Fantasy Pieces of Robert Schumann. Violinist Kristin Lee, 2015 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient, will join Michelle Djokic for Daron Hagen’s Duo for violin and cello. This intriguing work, original and engaging, is a nod to the Duo by Ravel. In the second half you will hear principal horn of San Antonio Symphony and newcomer to Concordia, Jeff Garza in the Quintet for piano, violin, cello, clarinet and French horn of Zdeněk Fibich. This rarely performed work written in the late 1800s will surprise you with its beautiful melodies and sonorous colors in this unusual instrumentation.

This program pairs Mozart’s beloved String Quartet #19 in C major K. 465 also known as the Dissonance Quartet along with Diamond in the Rough by Grammy winning composer, Michael Daugherty, for violin, viola and percussion. The latter was commissioned as a tribute to Mozart’s 250th Birthday Celebration in 2006. To close out this program and the season you will be treated to the String Quintet of Johannes Brahms, Opus 111 in G Major.
